“The last time I was in Chicago was to remember my mother – the woman who showed me the importance of hard work, humility and decency… who set my moral compass high and showed me the power of my voice. I still feel her loss so deeply… I wasn’t even sure I would be steadfast enough to stand before you tonight,” she said. “But my heart compelled me to be here because I feel a responsibility to honor her memory… and to remind us all not to waste the sacrifices our ancestors made to give us a better future.”
She also took aim at Donald Trump, criticizing his controversial statements, including his recent comment on “black jobs” in the debate with Joe Biden.
“For years, Donald Trump has done everything in his power to make people afraid of us. His limited and narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated, successful people who also happened to be black,” she said. “By the way, who’s going to tell him that the job he’s looking for right now might be one of those ‘black jobs’?”
