Detroit Tigers’ Riley Greene returns from the injured list

play

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene was activated from the injured list just in time for the MLB Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Greene, who turns 24 at the end of September, has recovered from a strained right hamstring and completed his rehab tasks and will play in Sunday’s exhibition game against the New York Yankees at Journey Bank Ballpark at historic Bowman Field.

It will be his first game for the Tigers since July 25th.

Greene played two games for Triple-A Toledo as part of his rehab assignment, both in left field. He finished 1-for-6 with no walks and one strikeout in his six plate appearances.

The Tigers did not have to take any action in removing Greene from the injured list because teams are allowed a 27th player for special event games, meaning everyone else on the roster – including fellow left hitter Zach McKinstry – is safe from action until Tuesday.

However, a roster change will be necessary before the opener of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Tuesday.

For the Tigers in 2024, in his third MLB season, Greene has a batting average of .264 with 17 home runs, 51 walks and 109 strikeouts in 101 games. His OPS of .842 ranks 20th among 140 qualified batters. For his performance, he was named an All-Star for the first time this season.

Greene is the Tigers’ best offensive player.

And he’s ready to play again.

Gio Urshela is released from waiver

Third baseman Gio Urshela, who the Tigers recently designated for assignment, was activated off waivers on Sunday. The 32-year-old was placed on the unconditional release list, a formality to be released and become a free agent.

Urshela, who posted a .243 batting average and .619 OPS in 92 games with the Tigers, will be eligible for the postseason if he signs with a new team by Aug. 31. He has made the playoffs four times in his nine-year MLB career, including three with the Yankees.
