Disappointing update on “Joker 3” by Todd Phillips – Comic book adaptations and news about superhero films

Fans hope for a Jokers 3 by Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix may be disappointed after Phillips’ recent update on the future of the franchise.

In a recent interview with Variety about the upcoming “Joker: Folie à Deux,” Phillips briefly mentioned the future of the franchise and practically seemed to confirm that there are no plans for a third film.

What did Todd Phillips say about Joker 3?

“It was fun to play in that kind of sandbox for two movies, but I think we said what we wanted to say in that world,” Phillips said of his time in the world of comic book adaptations.

Although Phillips didn’t directly confirm that a third film isn’t planned, his comments suggest that both he and Phoenix are done with the role. With James Gunn also planning to flesh out his own Batman franchise and Matt Reeves’ Batman universe still growing, fans will have no shortage of Batman-related content.

Joker: Folie á Deux is directed by Todd Phillips, who also directed the 2019 Joker film. Before that, Phillips directed mostly comedy films, including Old School (2003), Starsky & Hutch (2004), The Hangover (2009), Due Date (2010), The Hangover 2 (2011), The Hangover 3 (2013), and War Dogs (2016).

The first Joker film was released in October 2019. It was a huge success for Warner Bros. Pictures, grossing around $1.079 billion at the worldwide box office on an estimated budget of $55 million. The film was nominated for numerous Oscars, with Phoenix winning Best Actor and Hildur Guðnadóttir winning Best Original Score.

Joker was originally supposed to be a standalone film. However, in June 2022, Phillips officially announced that there would be a sequel. Joker: Folie á Deux is set in a different continuity than James Gunn and Peter Safran’s upcoming DC Universe, which officially launches next December with an animated Creature Commandos series.

The screenplay for “Joker 2” was co-written by Phillips and Scott Silver, who both also wrote the screenplay for the first film.
