District football coaches select Bixby and Union for 6AI titles

DISTRICT 6AI-1

Overview: Bixby emerged as district champions in its first two years in 6AI and went on to win the gold ball. Overall, Bixby has won six consecutive district and state titles, the first four each in 6AII. Jenks has appeared in five state championship games in the last six years, but has won only one district title during that span. The key games in the district race are Jenks at Bixby on Sept. 27, Jenks at Mustang on Oct. 11 and Bixby at Mustang on Oct. 25.

DISTRICT 6AI-2

Overview: Union has won 33 district titles since 1959. The Redhawks have won the last three district titles in a row after going two years without one for the first time since 1992-97. Union has won 19 district titles in 21 seasons from 1998-2018. Santa Fe won 6AI-1 district titles in 2019 and 2020. Owasso is the guest at Union’s home opener on Oct. 4 — that’s fitting since the Rams’ new head coach, Antonio Graham, graduated from Union in 2005. Owasso won district titles in 2019 and 2020. Other key games include Union at Edmond Santa Fe and Broken Arrow at Owasso on Sept. 27 and Broken Arrow at Union on Oct. 25.

DISTRICT 6AII-1

Overview: Muskogee is the defending state champion but fell short of the district title, losing to Stillwater for the second straight year in the regular season finale. Highway 97 rivals Sand Springs and Sapulpa will likely battle for second place in Week 10 on Nov. 8. Other key games include Muskogee’s visit to Sand Springs on Oct. 25 and its game against Sapulpa on Nov. 1.

DISTRICT 5A-3

Overview: Bishop Kelley won 5A-4 last year. Important games for the Comets are Oct. 4 against Coweta and Oct. 11 at Booker T. Washington. Incidentally, his former coach Antwain Jimmerson faces East Central on Oct. 18. Coweta plays two straight games against Arkansas teams – Sept. 13 against Fort Smith Northside and Sept. 20 at Prairie Grove.

DISTRICT 5A-4EXPECTED END

Overview: Del City is the defending district champion. Five of Del City’s six road games are in the Tulsa area. Key games for Del City are Sept. 27 at Collinsville and Nov. 1 at Claremore. Claremore, a state semifinalist last year, has made 17 playoff appearances since its last district title in 1999. Collinsville visits Claremore on Oct. 17.
