District offers free online diabetes management program from September 12th

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the Maryland Living Well Center of Excellence, is offering a free six-week online Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP) beginning September 12. The program meets every Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Experts at Stanford University developed the DSMP to help participants manage their diabetes both physically and emotionally. The program teaches important skills to lower A1C levels and reduce the risks and complications associated with diabetes.

The workshop will take place on 12, 19 and 23 September and on 3, 10 and 17 October.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 30 million Americans have diabetes. In Maryland, 10.5 percent of adults—nearly 500,000 people—have diabetes, and about 34 percent (1.6 million) have prediabetes.

Participants will learn how to stay active, make better food choices, problem solve, make decisions, and cope with the challenges of living with diabetes. The workshop will cover ways to improve eating habits, increase physical activity, and maintain a healthy weight.

The program complements medical treatment services for diabetes and has proven health benefits. Participants gain the ability to maintain an active and fulfilling lifestyle while improving their problem-solving and decision-making skills.

Individuals with diabetes or prediabetes, or those who care for someone with diabetes, should register for the DSMP workshop. Register online or contact Duwem Onwubiko at 240-777-1858.
