What if…? Donald Duck would become the mighty Thor No. 1!

Donald Duck continues his foray into Marvel Comics and takes on the role of Thor in What if…? Donald Duck became the mighty Thor #1. The iconic Disney duck has already followed in Wolverine’s footsteps, but his anniversary collaboration with Marvel continues. Donald won’t be the first non-Marvel character to wield Thor’s hammer Mjolnir, however.

This year, Donald Duck is celebrating his 90th birthday – and in style. He has been a hero himself for some time, as the Duck Avenger in comics. He made his debut as a Marvel hero in What if…? Donald Duck became Wolverine #1 in July.

With Wolverine’s experiences in the Weapon X program rewritten, the Duck is now ready to take on Thor’s origins. This will be the first time he’s officially wielded Thor’s hammer, but many years ago he was beaten by a DC heroine as the first non-Marvel character to wield it.

DC’s Wonder Woman steals Disney’s iconic duck’s biggest potential Thor honor

A preview for What if…? Donald Duck became the mighty Thor #1 features the titular hero in the place of Donald Blake as he encounters a cave and becomes the mighty Thor. The preview also features Donald’s nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Becoming Thor means Donald gets to wield the legendary weapon Mjolnir. In Marvel Comics – and very memorably in the MCU – several characters have lifted or carried Mjolnir. Captain America, Vision, and Jane Foster are all notable examples. However, in a crossover with DC Comics, Wonder Woman also wielded Mjolnir, beating Donald to become the first non-Marvel hero to do so.

Although Donald is an unexpected character for the role of Thor, the collaboration between Marvel and Disney has produced some very interesting mashups.

DC vs Marvel/Marvel vs DCa four-issue series released in 1996, has the creative team Ron Marz, Peter David, Dan Jurgens, and Claudio Castellini. In the second issue, Wonder Woman discovers the missing Mjolnir and is deemed worthy to wield it. Despite this, during a battle with Storm, Diana would ultimately not use Mjolnir against her enemy, forgoing the incredible power it would have given her. Nevertheless, Wonder Woman, like Captain America and Jane Foster, was worthy to possess the power of Thor, just as Donald Duck will now have it.

Disney’s partnership with Marvel Comics continues

However, in a crossover with DC Comics, Wonder Woman also wielded Mjolnir, becoming the first non-Marvel hero to do so, beating Donald.

What if…? Donald Duck became the mighty Thor #1 has the creative team Steve Behling, Riccardo Secchi and Lorenzo Pastrovicchio. It will feature several different covers by Walter Simonson, Peach Momoko, Phil Noto and Skottie Young. Although Donald may be an unexpected character in the role of Thor, the collaborations between Marvel and Disney have produced some highly interesting mashups. The ongoing partnership between Disney and Marvel gives Donald Duck more opportunities to experience power and magic, although DC’s Wonder Woman beat him to the punch and was able to wield Mjolnir.

What if…? Donald Duck became the mighty Thor #1 will be available from Marvel Comics on September 4th.
