Extreme weather conditions in parts of Canada cause severe flooding and power outages

Extreme weather conditions in parts of Canada are causing flooding and power outages in several areas, including Toronto, Mississauga and North Dumfries Township.

Environment Canada issued several weather alerts on Saturday, including rain warnings and a severe thunderstorm warning.

Extremely heavy rain has continued in Toronto since 3:08 p.m., with rainfall totals of 100 to 200 mm. Heavy rain is also occurring in Mississauga, and is expected to continue this afternoon through Sunday, according to Environment Canada.

In Waterloo Region, emergency services across the region provided assistance “following a tornado warning and reports of a tornado touching down in North Dumfries Township,” according to a Waterloo Regional Police news release.

“At around 11 a.m., police responded to reports of a tornado touching down in the area of Greenfield Road between Northumberland Street and Trussler Road in Ayr,” the press release states. “Several homes and businesses in the area sustained property damage, and several trees and power lines were downed.”

According to Waterloo Regional Police, about 3,000 homes in Ayr are without power due to the storm.

“No injuries were reported in North Dumfries Township or the entire Waterloo Region as a result of the tornado and severe weather,” the press release said.

The Mississauga Fire Department said in a post on X that firefighters had been assisting pedestrians in the flood-affected areas and that several roads had been closed.

“Some roads are locally flooded. Please be safe and plan your route accordingly,” said the Mississauga Fire Department.

Due to weather conditions, there were service interruptions at Toronto Pearson Airport on Saturday.

“Due to a disruptive storm system over Toronto Pearson Airport this afternoon that has persisted for an extended period of time, numerous flight diversions and ground delays are occurring. This is having a significant impact on passengers,” Toronto Pearson Airport wrote on X. “Travellers are advised to check with their airline before departing to the airport. Updates to follow.”
