F1 partners with Aggreko to provide low-carbon energy solutions for European races from 2025

As part of its goal to become carbon neutral by 2030, Formula 1 today announced a multi-year partnership with Aggreko, a world leader in temporary power solutions, to provide innovative low-carbon power generation systems for all European Grands Prix from the 2025 season. As part of the agreement, Aggreko will become an official supplier to Formula 1.

Aggreko and Formula 1 have been working together on this system since 2023, when they first launched a pilot of a central power generation plant at the Austrian Grand Prix, reducing associated CO2 emissions in the paddock, pit lane and broadcast areas by over 90% compared to the 2022 event.

The plant will run on renewable energy sources such as Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO), biofuel, solar panels and battery storage systems. After returning to the Red Bull Ring earlier this season, the system was tested again at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2024 and is also in use at Monza this weekend. This extended testing has consistently resulted in a reduction in carbon emissions and from 2025 the system will be used throughout the European Grand Prix season.

The expansion to all European races in 2025 means that stakeholders, including Formula 1, F1 teams and the FIA, will not need to use or bring their own generators, as the central system will generate enough power to power all garages and motorhomes throughout the weekend. In addition, the system will also power the pit wall, timing room, the Formula 1 Event Technical Centre (ETC) which houses trackside broadcasts and the International TV compound from which all F1 host broadcasters operate at the event. It significantly reduces the number of individual generators on site in these operational areas and therefore reduces the associated emissions from transport to the venue.

“The entire paddock is part of our commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030 and solutions such as the low-carbon energy generation system combine technological innovation with coordinated action,” commented Ellen Jones, Head of ESG, Formula 1.

“In practice, this means we can achieve significant carbon reductions in this area – and we look forward to continuing to demonstrate how we can run more sustainable events.”

Robert Wells, President of Aggreko Europe and Aggreko Event Services, added: “Aggreko has an unrivalled track record of delivering energy transition solutions around the world, in the most demanding, challenging and mission-critical environments, ensuring our customers’ needs are always met to the highest standards.

“As a global leader, we have an important role to play in the energy transition and we are thrilled that Formula 1 has chosen Aggreko to support them on their journey to a carbon-neutral sports car by 2030. We look forward to continuing to work with Formula 1 and to driving change together towards a positive future.”
