Feature film adaptation of Garth Ennis’ controversial comic series in the works

After the great success of Prime Video The boysAnother comic book creation by author Garth Ennis hits the screen – and this one is even more twisted, depraved and downright devilish.

THR (via ComicBookMovie.com) reports that a Crossed The film is currently in development at indie company Six Studios and Ennis has already completed the script.

Crossed and its various spin-offs are widely considered to be the most disturbing comics of all time, and for good reason. The story revolves around the survivors of a pandemic that turns its victims into homicidal maniacs. Marked with a red, cross-shaped rash on their faces, these individuals retain their basic human minds but are unable to control their worst impulses and commit all manner of atrocities.

Ennis commented on the controversial depictions of depravity in Crossed during an interview in 2010 with Bleeding cool.

“The acts you see in history, however, are by no means invented. A quick glance at the history books reveals all kinds of depraved activities; thousands upon thousands of horrible things we have done to each other since the beginning of time. Look at what went on in the torture chambers of the Inquisition, or what the settlers and natives did to each other on the great plains of North America, or what was going on in Eastern Europe in the mid-1990s. And hell, look at what people do to each other in prison, or what many women have to fear on their way home from work in urban areas.

The list is endless. I’m not even talking about concepts like genocide or religious or ethnic cleansing, nor do I want to play the numbers game with different casualty figures. I’m simply talking about what people do to each other when circumstances allow them free rein.”

The original 10-issue miniseries – which forms the basis for the film – was published from 2008 to 2010, but has since spawned over 200 issues by various other writers and artists, including Alan Moore.

A director is currently being sought for the project, which is said to have a budget of between $2 million and $3 million. Production is set to begin in the fall.

Carl Choi of Six Studios will produce along with Ben Hung of Retro Entertainment and Ken Levin of Nightsky Productions.

Choi says the script is “an intimate, human story” And “the greatest possible adaptation”, Comparison with “Contagion meets The Walking Dead, with echoes of Alex Garland’s Civil War, because it’s a road movie through the devastated United States.”

2021 Taiwanese horror film The sadness was partly inspired by Crossed.
