Fire reported at hotel in Oxnard where the Dallas Cowboys are staying

Oxnard Fire Department responded to a fire reported late Tuesday afternoon at the Residence Inn at River Ridge, adjacent to the playing fields where the Dallas Cowboys held their training camp.

According to information from the county fire department, the fire was reported at around 4:55 p.m. at the hotel at 2101 W. Vineyard Ave. The NFL team is staying at the hotel during training camp.

According to authorities, no injuries were reported.

According to radio traffic, Oxnard Fire Department crews responding to the incident soon reported that the fire was under control. The fire was under control by 5:10 p.m., said Battalion Chief Steve McNaughten.

The fire broke out in Building 13, one of the residential areas of the hotel where the team is staying, McNaughten said.

There was no one in the unit at the time, the battalion commander said.

McNaughten did not yet know which part of the apartment had burned. He described it as a “contents fire,” which typically affects items such as beds or furniture.

Because of the smoke damage, the resident will probably not be able to sleep in the affected rooms during the night from Tuesday to Sunday, he said. The authority usually requires that smoke-damaged buildings be cleaned before people can spend the night there.

About 35 firefighters were on the scene. The fire department has a presence in the area during the training camp and the closest fire engine from the station was able to do a good job, McNaughten said.

“From our side, it went pretty smoothly,” he said.

It appears that the fire broke out accidentally, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Cowboys released a statement about the incident.

“This afternoon there was a fire emergency in one of the guest rooms at the team’s hotel in Oxnard,” the statement said. “The emergency was confined to one room, which was empty at the time, and there were no injuries.”

The team thanked the Oxnard Fire Department and Police for their “quick response.”

The NFL team has been holding training camp at River Ridge Fields in Oxnard since late last month, with the last day of practice being Wednesday. It is the 18th training camp in Oxnard since 2001 and the 45th in Ventura County. The team trained at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks for 27 years, from 1963 to 1989.
