Flight instructor dies, student injured in helicopter crash at Army base in Alabama

According to the local county coroner’s office, a flight instructor was killed and an Army student pilot was injured in a helicopter crash at Fort Novosel in the US state of Alabama on Wednesday afternoon.

The helicopter, an AH-64 Apache, crashed during a routine flight exercise, said Dale County Coroner John Cawley.

The flight instructor who was flying the helicopter was killed in the crash. The only passenger, the student pilot, was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

“Our primary concern is the well-being and health of the student pilot, as well as the care and concern for the family of the deceased,” Maj. Gen. Clair A. Gill, U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence and commanding general of Fort Novosel, said in a statement to news agencies.

The statement said the accident was under investigation. Fox News Digital has reached out to the military base for an update.

Alabama lawmakers expressed their condolences to X.

Republican Rep. Barry Moore of Alabama wrote that he and his wife were “heartbroken” when they heard about the crash.

“We pray for a speedy recovery for the injured student pilot and comfort for the family of the deceased flight instructor,” Moore said.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for Wiregrass and our entire state. Wesley and I are praying for those affected, especially the flight instructor’s family and the student pilot’s recovery,” Senator Katie Britt (Republican of Alabama) wrote on X. “Our deepest condolences go out to the entire Fort Novosel community.”

Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) wrote that he was “deeply saddened to hear of the fatal helicopter crash.”

“Please join me in praying for the grieving family and friends of the deceased teacher. We also pray for the full recovery of the injured student,” Tuberville said.

Fort Novosel, formerly known as Fort Rucker, is the Army’s primary training facility for helicopter pilots.
