Residents of Florida, the Sunshine State, are entering the hottest months of the year. With cooling accounting for about 60% of energy costs, Florida Power & Light Company wants to help customers keep their bills as low as possible with the launch of its interactive energy-saving tool, the House of Savings Challenge.

TPS: Here’s how to save on some of the biggest energy drivers in your home:

■ When washing clothes, use the cold water setting to $0.80 per load. Never overload the machine when drying and always remember to clean the filter. 90% of the energy used to wash clothes is generated by heating up the dryer.

■ Set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature between 75 and 78 degreesand remember that you can save for every degree over 75 3-5% on your monthly cooling costs.

■ Phantom energy consumers, such as electrical devices that are switched off but still plugged in, can consume up to 5-10% of electricity consumption in your home. When you are not actively using the appliances in your home – e.g. air fryers, game consoles or pedestal fans – unplug them.

■ Your water heater is usually the second largest energy consumer in your home. Lower the water heater temperature from 140° to 120° to save 3 to 5% on your energy costs and you still have plenty of hot water.

In the new challenge, players are taken on a mission to get a household’s energy consumption back under control by solving tasks and answering energy-related questions.

Whoever answers the most questions correctly in the shortest amount of time will be entered to win a DIY energy saving kit from House of Savings to help make their home more efficient, or they can donate their prize to FPL’s Care To Share program, which is dedicated to helping Floridians in need.
