FOOD this week: Mr. Toads from The Sliceshack

Deciding where and what to eat around the pool each week can be a challenge—there are so many great options. In this post, we’ll dive into dishes that are sure to satisfy your hunger and leave you wondering where to go next.

As far as I’m concerned, pizza can be put into the whole death and taxes thing, because it’s about as safe as those two – at least with me. Now, not all pizzas are the same, but I really have to dig to find fault with any variety, because pretty much every pizza puts a smile on my face – especially in the case of this week’s feature.

You don’t have to look far to figure out how this pizza’s name relates to Tahoe culture. But just like the trail’s clever name, this pizza is a wild ride and it all starts with pizza dough that goes through a three-day fermentation process that ensures optimal flavor and texture. The toppings are homemade tomato sauce, sausage, ricotta cheese and fresh basil, and then it’s topped with a hot honey glaze.

While you can get the whole cake to go, as the name of the company suggests, you can also order it by the slice. And by slice, I mean PIECE. I seriously had to ask if the portion size was normal, because it seemed to be the same size as my head. But while the size was indeed their normal portion, the taste was anything but normal (in the best sense).

The crust and sauce were as perfect as you could hope for in a pizza, and all of the toppings went together as well as the USA women’s 4×400 relay team. Ricotta, not a regular cheese, adds a welcome creaminess that enhances every bite, but for me the real deal is the final drop. The sweetness of the honey mutes the richness of the ricotta and gives it the perfect tang.

Despite the huge piece, I think I ate the whole thing in record time. If you’re suffering from an Olympic hangover, this could be a good cure. You should try it for yourself.
