DETROIT – Ford Motor Production at a new Tennessee plant to make a next-generation all-electric pickup truck will be delayed and plans for a three-row electric SUV will be canceled, the company said Wednesday.

Instead, Ford says it will prioritize the development of hybrid models and electric commercial vehicles, such as a new electric delivery van in 2026, followed by two pickup trucks in 2027.

The pickups are expected to be a full-size truck, which is scheduled to be produced in 2027 at the plant currently under construction in Tennessee, and a new midsize pickup.

Ford said it would incur a special charge of approximately $400 million to write off certain product-specific production facilities, including the discontinuation of production of the three-row SUV.

The company said the changes could also result in additional costs and cash expenditures of up to $1.5 billion, which Ford will record as special items in the quarter in which they occur.

Vehicle production at the new Tennessee plant was originally scheduled to begin next year. The company said it still expects to begin producing battery cells at the site in 2025.
