Forest fires lead to evacuation order and alarm in the Kuyakuz Lake area

Due to the wildfires in the region, the Cariboo Regional District Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has issued an evacuation order for 30 parcels in the Kuyakuz Lake area, effective August 9. This order affects 33,648 hectares.

In addition, an evacuation warning has been issued for 28 parcels in the same area covering 88,481 hectares due to the wildfire burning north of the Blackwater River in the Prince George Fire Centre. The evacuation order and evacuation warning are a result of several out of control wildfires in the Prince George Fire Centre.

Residents of the areas affected by the evacuation order are instructed to leave immediately.

Those who choose to ignore this order and remain in the area do so at their own risk and emergency responders may not be able to assist them, the EOC said. The designated evacuation route is eastward to Quesnel.

Given the imminent danger posed by the fire, the RCMP and other groups will expedite this evacuation.

Residents of areas under evacuation alert are advised to prepare for a possible evacuation order. This includes creating a transportation plan for all family members or coworkers, preparing a bag for each person with essentials such as clothing, food, toiletries, medications, eyeglasses, important documents and optional keepsakes, and ensuring loved ones and pets are prepared by providing comfort items, kennels or leashes to facilitate a smooth evacuation.
