Game Chat: Mets vs. Mariners, 9:40 p.m.

Saturday, August 10, 2024 • 9:40 p.m.
T-Mobile Park • Seattle, WA
Left-hander Sean Manaea (8-4, 3.30) against right-hander Logan Gilbert (6-8, 3.05)
WPIX • MLBN

The strength of the Seattle Mariners is their starting pitching and the Mets are supported by a good starter in Bryce Miller to Logan Gilbert tonight in Seattle. The Mets were unable to overcome Miller and the Mariners bullpen on Friday night, losing the game 6-0. The Braves lost their sixth game in a row, so the Mets are still a half-game ahead of the final wild-card spot, but both teams chasing them for higher seedings have won. Both the Mariners and Mets need this series – can the Mets force the playoff tomorrow?

Game Notes

  • Sean Manaea was masterful in his last start against the Cardinals, striking out 10 in seven scoreless innings and joining Tom Seaver And Dwight Gooden as the only other Mets starter to throw scoreless pitches with double-digit punchouts in seven consecutive innings.
  • The Mets failed to score a single point in Friday’s 6-0 loss to the Mariners. It was the ninth time the Mets failed to score a single point in 2024. The Mets have posted just four shutouts this season.
  • Jesse Winker is on the bench Saturday against a right-hander. The outfielder has a .292 batting average with the Mets this season but has failed to get an extra-base hit in 24 at-bats.

Three things to look out for

  1. Runner in batting position again. The Mets’ lack of offense on Friday night was once again due to runners in scoring position. The Mets went 0-8 with RISP and wasted doubles by Vientos, Nimmo and Martinez. The Mets need to take advantage of situations where they get runners on base.
  2. Keep runner on base. Earlier this season, it felt like teams were running over the Mets. That feeling came back Friday night when the Mariners stole four bases from the Mets.
  3. Can the Mets win in Seattle? Jerry Blevins was the winning pitcher for the Mets when they last won a game on July 28, 2017 in Seattle. Mike Mayer sshared the Mets lineup for the game on Friday.

Let’s go, Mets!
