Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the horror comic created by Ennis Crossed is also being adapted: The independent company Six Studios has secured the rights to make a film based on the series.

Ennis wrote the screenplay for the Crossed film, and Six Studios is looking for a director. They plan to put together a budget of $2-3 million for the project… but if the right talent comes on board, the budget could increase. The hope is that no matter who ends up taking the helm or starring, Crossed will go into production this fall.

Crossed is set in a world ravaged by a pandemic, where those who contract a disease are marked with a cross-shaped rash on their face. Those affected follow their worst impulses – think of a zombie apocalypse, but instead of zombies, these are people who retain their sanity but are homicidal maniacs. The script that Ennis wrote is said to be based on the first ten issues of the comic, but there is much more source material that could be drawn upon if this film were to launch a franchise. There were more than 200 issues of Crossed Comics by various authors and artists.

Carl Choi of Six Studios produces the Crossed film starring Ben Hung of Retro Entertainment and Ken Levin of Nightsky Productions. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Hung and Levin developed the project with Ennis and brought the property to Six Studios. Jeff Huang of Six Studios is executive producing along with Ennis, Carl Amari and Bill Patterson.

Choi describes the Crossed script as an intimate, human story and the most faithful adaptation of the comics possible. The producer told the Hollywood Reporter that it was like “infection meets The Walking Deadwith echoes of Alex Garland’s Civil Warin that it is a road movie through the devastated United States.”
