Gotham City Sirens #2 Review

The current Gotham City Sirens The miniseries is instantly endearing, and achieves this by assuming the reader is already familiar with all of its characters and moving parts. Very little time has been spent establishing exposition, as there are no pre-existing dramatic hurdles to overcome. We are thrown into a book with characters we love, whose relationships work flawlessly, and who are just as ready to throw themselves into a new adventure as we are.

This may sound like a small thing, but Gotham City is a notoriously tricky setting narratively. You have to take the Gotham Wars into account. Our main heroes have to deal with the problems of their solo books. Hell, Harley Quinn was recently whisked back into the Suicide Squad with barely noticeable consequences.

Ignoring all of that gives our Sirens the freedom to revel in their fun, comfortable relationships. The absurdity of a triumvirate of cat fetishist, clown, and plant woman feels nowhere more natural than in the snarky quips of a long-term connection.

Gotham City Sirens #2 reveals a bit more of series villain Punchline’s evil plot, rooted in the uncomfortable realities of streamer culture and branding deals. It’s more than a bit of parody that she’s promoting Logan Paul-style energy drinks in a world where online content is becoming increasingly branded. That her energy drink also turns its consumers into zombies might be a bit obvious, but her streaming model is surprisingly striking: video game streams in skimpy clothing are by no means uncommon.

Kidnapping other women to spread the brand? I can’t say if that’s a common practice or not.

The sense of humor is perhaps the most appealing aspect of the book. Author Leah Williams captures a craziness in her Harley that sings. The relationships in the book feel earnest, worn, and delightful.

Taking over the reins from last issue’s artist Matteo Lolli is Daniel Hillyard, who relies on cartoonishly exaggerated facial expressions and the occasional silly visual gag. The issue doesn’t have as much action as its predecessor – but we also don’t spend as much time with stomping buffalo robots, all-terrain vehicle chases, and actively feeding carnivorous plants as we did in the last issue.

Gotham City Sirens #2 continues one of the most entertaining miniseries of the year. Snappy, sweet, and full of keen character insights, it’s a must-read for fans of any (or all) of these badass antiheroes.

Wonderfully charismatic relationships.

Fantastic sense of humor.

A bit stiff and flat.
