Government reports Playa del Carmen and Akumal have the highest hotel occupancy in the country

Riviera Maya, QR – Playa del Carmen and Akumal are considered the two busiest tourist centers in the country. The Mexican government’s Ministry of Tourism says that hotel occupancy in these two areas topped the list of busiest hotels in the first half of 2024.

Miguel Torruco Marqués, Minister of Tourism of the Mexican government, reported that the average hotel occupancy rate in Playa del Carmen is 89 percent, followed by Akumal with 82 percent.

Torruco Marqués explained that in the first half of 2024, hotels in Playacar in particular had the highest occupancy (89.8 percent), followed by hotels in other areas of Playa del Carmen (75.1 percent). The second most occupant area was Akumal in the municipality of Tulum with 82.8 percent.

According to Miguel Torruco Marqués’ report, more than 41 million tourists stayed in hotel rooms across Mexico in the first half of 2024. Of these, 29.4 million (75.1 percent) were domestic tourists and 11.7 million were foreigners, representing 28.5 percent of the total in the 70 centers monitored by DataTur, which provided the figures.

He noted that during this period, hotel occupancy rates in the 70 destinations monitored by DataTur reached 60 percent, with occupancy rates in urban destinations reaching 52.4 percent and in beach destinations reaching 68.5 percent.

Other areas with high levels of traffic or hotel occupancy in the first half of 2024 are Nuevo Nayarit with 80.8 percent, Cabo San Lucas with 80 percent and Cancun with 77.7 percent.
