Guests allowed to return to their rooms after evacuation of a Salt Lake City hotel

SALT LAKE CITY – Several floors of the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel in downtown Salt Lake City were briefly evacuated Friday due to suspicious circumstances.

Thirteen floors on the north side of the hotel were evacuated; guests in rooms on the south, east and west sides sought shelter in place.

“Our officers were able to review surveillance camera footage of this incident. We saw a man with a suitcase enter the hotel grounds and place the luggage in a very suspicious manner,” said SLCPD spokesman Brent Weisberg.

The footage showed him setting down the luggage and continuing to manipulate it in a manner that seemed suspicious to them before running away.

After several minutes, the police announced that an object had been examined using X-ray technology and that it had been concluded that it did not pose a threat to public safety.

Thirteen floors on the north side of the hotel were evacuated.

The evacuees were allowed to return to their rooms and the hotel resumed normal operations. The investigation into the man who left the suitcase is ongoing.
