Hazbin Hotel creator hints at Helluva Boss crossover event

A possible crossover between Hazbin Hotel And A damn good boss is now much more feasible thanks to comments from series creator Vivienne Medrano.

The two series are highly rated and have nearly identical styles and moods. They even exist within the same canon (known as the Hellaverse), albeit in two different cities in Hell—Hazbin Hotel takes place in the pentagram, while A damn good boss takes place in Imp City.

However, there was never a proper crossover. The best fans got were brief glimpses of the characters on TVs in the background or drawings on whiteboards.

The Direct spoke with Hazbin Hotel And A damn good boss Creator Vivienne Medrano during a roundtable interview at San Diego Comic-Con, where she discussed the possibility of a full-fledged crossover between her two hit series.

“I’m pretty confident something will happen,” she explained, adding how “it was never possible like this:”

“I really hope we can do it. I feel like it’s never been more possible because there’s so much love behind both shows. So it’s definitely not impossible. A full-fledged crossover is my dream. So, fingers crossed that it happens. But I’m pretty confident that it will happen.”

Both shows have a lot of support from fans on both platforms (one on Prime Video and the other on YouTube), and Amazon Studios has already expressed its enthusiasm for HazbinExtension of the animated series for seasons 3 and 4.

With the guarantee of more story “was great”, She confirmed this and helped “(open) the door” for “all these things that (she) wanted to do:”

“The nice thing about Amazon is that I was able to tell them how the story was going and what my plan was. I think that contributed to the decision to greenlight more. So I’m really happy with the support that’s behind it. And also that so much more of the story is already guaranteed. It’s great. It opens the door for all the planning and the placement of storylines and all these things that I’ve always wanted to do.”

When it comes to Hazbin Hotel In season 2, the creator also gave a preview of the musical elements and noted that in her opinion “the diversity of songs” for the new episodes is “even more extreme” as Season 1:

“The variety of songs in season 2 is even greater than season 1, I think. So I’m really happy for people. I can’t pick a favorite in season 2 because some of the songs are just such opposite genres, but they’re so equally good in their respective genres that I think it just depends on my mood. Which one is my favorite… But I think especially season 2 has a greater range, I think even than season 1.”

Medrano also revealed that Season 2 will cover additional backstories of several fan-favorite characters:

“Oh, absolutely. I mean, those are obviously things that I want to incorporate throughout the series, but I would say that season 2 has a few of those. I can’t say who, but we’re definitely getting some backstory going, and I’m very excited about that because it’s interesting; it’s like all these characters are in hell, and it’s like they’re being asked what led them there. So we’re getting a few of those in season 2, which I’m very excited about.”

While the creative process is constantly evolving, “the main arch plan” that they “is quite concrete:”

“My main story arc plan is pretty concrete, but when it comes to the actual writing, things are constantly changing. Because of the episodes themselves, we’re thinking them up at this early stage. So what’s exciting for me is that I know roughly what a season should be about. I’m like, ‘Oh, I know which characters should be the villains, I know what character arc should happen in the season and things like that. But the actual execution of that is so uncertain.'”

She elaborated further and explained that although they had a plan in advance, “so much is changing because of the need to tell this story:”

“And so much can change. We may introduce new characters or we may find that this character should have a bigger impact on this story. So much changes because of the need to tell this story as we decide what the arc of the season is going to be. So I’m excited for seasons 3 and 4 to finally figure out what those arcs are going to be because then they’ll tell me how much of my plan I can fit into it.”

When asked which character she would like to explore further, Medrano quickly pointed to both Angel and Husk:

“I really love Angel and I really like Husk too. And I think those are characters that I really want to spend more time with. And I think just generally spending more time with the characters, just hanging out, because so far in the show… we need to make every episode as long as possible to make sure the story is told as well as possible.”

She further explained that she also wants more “quiet moments” with the cast:

“And sometimes that’s at the expense of the characters just having quiet moments because so much is happening. So I hope as the show goes on we can do more of those moments because the characters have so much fun together. So, you know, I know people would call it filler, but even if there’s just one episode where they hang out, it’s just really easy. I would love to do something like that.”

Why hasn’t there been a crossover between Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss yet?

A crossover between Hazbin Hotel And A damn good boss seems like an obvious step, so why hasn’t it happened yet?

The answer could lie in complicated rights issues. Hazbin Hotel was bought and is now owned by A24, while A damn good boss is not.

Given Vivienne Medrano’s positive attitude towards the subject, this may not be the obstacle it once was. It honestly wouldn’t be surprising if A24 considered official licensing A damn good boss and maybe even produce more spin-off shows.

Both of Vivienne Medrano’s series have multiple seasons planned and millions upon millions of fans, so their dominance in animation isn’t going to end anytime soon. It seems like now is the perfect time to get to work and expand the Hellaverse into its own hell-conquering empire.
