He is a serious criminal: CP Vineet Goyal

City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal addressed a press conference to inform about the developments in the police investigation into the incident.

He said, “This is an unfortunate incident. Yesterday at 10:30 am, Tala PS was informed that a woman was found lying in the seminar room of the hospital. The Homicide Squad rushed to the scene. The West Bengal FSL department was called to the scene. We had called for the services of the judicial magistrate for the investigation. An inquest was conducted in the presence of the judicial magistrate, parents (of the deceased) and RG Kar MCH students. After the inquest, the postmortem was conducted and a panel of three doctors, two of whom were women, was constituted for the proceedings. The entire proceedings were videotaped. Students and family members were present as witnesses during the postmortem.”

The CP also informed that besides the FSL team, an SIT has been formed for the investigation. The DC DD Special is heading the SIT and an additional CP (1) is personally supervising it. The 7-member team comprises Tala PS officers and DD officers. The investigation went on through the night and the evidence was analysed. The CCTV footage present near the PO was also analysed. Based on the evidence, one person was arrested. The evidence against him was collected. The investigation is still going on. He will be produced in court today, he said.

“By analyzing CCTV evidence, some evidence from the police officer and thorough questioning of doctors and other witnesses, we have come to the conclusion that there is strong evidence against the accused. We consider him a serious criminal. We will ensure that he gets the maximum punishment. We are collecting more evidence and questioning more people. We will inform you as soon as we have anything. We are questioning him and trying to find out why he was present there at that time. This is not the end of the investigation and it is still in the initial stages. We are questioning more people. Not even 24 hours have passed since the investigation. We have done cross-checks and it is confirmed that he was there. There were signs of sexual assault,” the police officer said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Murli Dhar, who was also present at the meeting, said, “This is a sensitive case. As per Supreme Court guidelines, we cannot divulge every detail of the investigation before the media. As the Commissioner of Police said, we have initiated proceedings under Section 103 (1) and 64, BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita). This is a case of murder and sexual assault.”
