Here we go again! Comic Relief’s Mamma Mia sequel ‘hilarious’, say fans

Numerous stars, including Jennifer Saunders, Carey Mulligan, Gemma Arterton and Tom Hollander, wore wigs and extravagant outfits for the recreation of the 2019 box office hit Comic Relief. Mamma Mia: Here we go again! tonight – and the audience was thrilled.

@Elie9691 announced on Twitter that Jennifer Saunders – the author of the sketch – is a “Genius” while @wootton_charly6 said she was “Cry” the actress and writer was so good.

The original Mama Mia was also joined by the comedy duo Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders in a comic relief appearance in the first film ten years ago. This time, French was unable to join the troupe, which also included Alan Carr, Philip Glenister and Susan Calman, due to a scheduling conflict.

Abba fans have had little time to prepare for the sketch, as the BBC only announced who would be starring in the parody two weeks ago. At the time, Saunders said: “I’m very, very, very happy to be back. This is undoubtedly one of the silliest things I’ve ever done. But my God, I’m having so much fun.”

Saunders left nothing to chance in the sketch, parodying the arrival of Cher and the absence of Meryl Streep throughout most of the sequel, playing both roles herself. She even cast Miranda Hart as director Ol Parker. Parker was widely congratulated for Mamma Mia: Here we go again! to his box office success. He is married to Westworld with Thandie Newton as the star.

Tom Hollander took over the role of Andy Garcia from the film. He stole the show by delivering his lines in a gravelly voice and refusing to kiss Saunders’ Cher at the end of their song. Fernando.

The sketch was just one of several that evening. The other big crowd puller was a Four weddings and a funeral Reunion with most of the original cast members.
