Hotel Engineer – Volunteer (Mercy Ships)

This is a unpaid volunteer work On board our hospital ships Global Mercy or Africa Mercy, we help those in need in sub-Saharan Africa by providing free, life-saving treatment and strengthening health systems. The minimum time commitment for this volunteer opportunity varies, but the typical time commitment is 6-12 months up to 2 years.

In 2024, Global Mercy will anchor in Sierra Leone for field operations and Africa Mercy will anchor in Madagascar for field operations. (Field operations locations are subject to change based on demand or other factors.)

The maritime volunteers aboard Global Mercy and Africa Mercy are making a vital contribution to bringing hope and healing to the people of Africa. Summary description

Responsible for overseeing the maintenance of all HVACR, hospital and hotel/accommodation equipment and systems on board

Essential duties and responsibilities (including but not limited to)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform all essential duties:

Management of the HVACR and sanitation teams on board
Responsible for all systems in the accommodation and hospital sector
Maintain the necessary logbooks and properly document the maintenance work carried out as part of the company’s planned maintenance system.
Make sure there is sufficient refrigerant and refrigerant lubricating oil on board.
Manage the certification and recharging of all gas cylinders as part of the company’s planned maintenance system.
Manage onboard hospital, hotel and HVACR equipment inventory
Manage the onboard maintenance request system
Watchkeeping in the engine rooms, if required, in accordance with STCW certificate of competence
Follow the Company’s Safety Management System as it applies to the responsibilities of this position.

Requirements

Qualifications (knowledge, skills, abilities and requirements)

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required:

Being able to participate and contribute to community life; this requires stable and healthy interpersonal skills
Certificate of competency according to STCW A-III/1 desirable but not required
Has successfully completed basic safety training according to STCW A-VI/1-1 to 1-4
Has successfully completed the crowd management training according to STCW AV/2-1
Ability to communicate fluently in English, both written and spoken
A full, clean driving licence is required and must be accompanied by a valid International Driving Permit. You will be expected to drive as part of departmental duties

Education and experience

The requirements listed below are representative of the education and/or experience required:

Successful completion of the onboarding program
Appropriate training and experience in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning systems are required
Appropriate training and experience in mechanical engineering are an advantage
Any other background with training and experience in maintenance of hotels, hospitals, office/apartment blocks and factories will be considered
