How does the Umbrella Academy end in the comics?

No one can say for sure how similar the TV and comic versions of The Umbrella Academy‘s ending align, because the latter is not yet finished! That’s right: this is a game of Thrones-like scenario in which the author/artist team Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá have not yet completed the rest Umbrella Academy volumes.

So far only three of them have been published; a fourth, The Sparrow Academynevertheless served as the basis for The Umbrella Academy Season 3. Therefore, Season 4 consists mostly of original material and is not directly based on the comics. Showrunner Steve Blackman addressed this in an interview with The Mirror in August 2024.

“Well, first of all, there is no graphic novel for what we would call Season 4,” Blackman explained. “And as our series comes to a close, Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba are actually working on their next volume and they have a pretty good roadmap for where the story is going to go over the next few years.” However, in a recent Tudum interview, Blackman also hinted that Way and Ba’s draft does not cover at least one of Season 4’s biggest revelations: the truth about the “Jennifer incident.”

“To be honest, Gerard and Gabriel don’t know what the Jennifer incident is,” he said. “That’s my interpretation of it. They’re going to do something slightly different in their comic. But they were very kind and said, ‘Do your thing, and we’ll do our thing. Our comic will continue after the show.'”

Will anything from the fourth season finale of The Umbrella Academy be carried over into the comics?

So, The Umbrella Academy The end of the fourth season will be different in the comics. However, that does not mean that there will be no overlap between the series and the comics. In the Mirror interview, Blackman confirmed that key elements of the fourth season finale will appear in some form in the original story of Way and Bá.

“We deviated from their version (of the ending) and they make beautiful changes based on what we do in the TV series,” the showrunner said. “So we are symbiotic in some ways. But there are important elements – like the cleaning and the Jennifer incident – that are entirely Gerard and Gabriel’s.”
