How to change the default app for opening a file in Android

While Android lets you change the default apps to something else, other similar apps may prompt you to change them, so you need to carefully select apps that you want to always set as default, or only once when the prompt appears.

Step 1: Open Android SettingsNavigate to Appsand then select Standard apps.

Different versions of Android or OEM skins may have different names, so if you can’t find that exact location, search for Standard appsand it should appear.

Step 2: Now, look for the app whose default settings you want to change, tap on it and select an alternative app from the list. You can change the browser, calling app, phone, etc.

Step 3: If your file type is not in the list and you cannot change it, here is how to trick Android. For example, if you open a PDF file in a Foxit PDF editor and want to change it in Adobe, uninstall the Acrobat app and then reinstall it.

Then open a file and Android will prompt you to use a different app. You can select Android here. Next, open the PDF file again. This time Adobe Acrobat will be the default, but to make sure the app choice doesn’t appear again, tap Always.
