This will be the final road course race of the year for IndyCar, as four of the final five races are on oval tracks. Last Saturday night, an eventful finish helped the points leader move closer to the championship. Josef Newgarden recovered from a late-race spin and worked his way to the front to score just his second win of the season.

However, an accident just before the green flag with a few laps to go knocked Will Power out of the race and damaged his championship chances. Reigning champion Alex Palou finished fourth, his points lead over second-place driver Colton Herta is now 59 points. Scott Dixon and Power are third and fourth in the overall standings, 65 and 66 points behind Palou respectively.

Unless the top four produce a string of great performances and Palou suffers a massive slump, the Spanish rider is well on his way to winning his third championship title.

Palou won in Portland last year to secure the drivers’ title. In fact, he has won two of the last three races, with Scott McLaughlin winning in 2022.
