Huskers fight, lose to Blue Devils

LINCOLN, Nebraska (Nebraska Athletics) – The Nebraska football team had to fight without four key starters, but lost 3-0 to the Duke Blue Devils on Thursday night at Hibner Stadium in front of 1,320 fans.

The hard-fought loss dropped the Huskers to 1-2-0 on the season, while Duke improved to 1-1-0.

Duke scored the first goal in the first half when Ella Hase fired past a diving Cece Villa after an assist from Mia Oliaro. Nebraska had four shots on goal, two from Ella Guyott and two from Sarah Weber, but was unable to capitalize and Duke went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Devils held the upper hand over the final 45 minutes, extending their lead to 3-0 on goals from Farrah Walters and Mia Minestrella in the 69th and 77th minutes. The Huskers had a few chances, getting two shots on goal and one shot on goal, but were unable to break through Duke’s defense.

Villa started in goal for the second time in a row and played the full 90 minutes alongside Weber. Villa saved seven goals, making a total of 15 in the last two games.

Next, the Huskers continue their five-game home series when Omaha comes to town on Thursday, August 29 at 7:05 p.m. CT.
