As a Londoner living in America, I’ve discovered that every city in the US has its own charm and character. And even though I’d never been to Boston before, I expected to like it there. Not only because my friends had sold it to me as a “mini Manhattan,” which excited me as a huge New York fan, but also because I knew the airport featured in one of my favorite childhood movies: Home Alone! But seriously, I was looking forward to visiting the Windy City for its rich culture and vibrant food scene, and I was not disappointed! Frank Sinatra was right… this bustling city really is “my kind of city.”
Here’s a glimpse into my perfect day in Chicago:
Check-in at Kimpton Gray Hotel
My day started at the perfectly located Kimpton Gray Hotel, which is in the heart of Chicago’s “Loop” financial district and within walking distance of the city’s famous tourist attractions like Millenium Park and The Bean. The Art Deco building is majestic and the rooms are spacious, making it the perfect base for a day of exploring. So after a quick check-in, I head to the hotel’s restaurant for breakfast. The ambience is sophisticated due to the business meetings going on around me, but still very inviting, which sets the perfect tone for the day ahead.
Millennium Park and The Bean
No trip to Chicago would be complete without a visit to Millennium Park, just a short walk from my hotel. It’s like an urban oasis filled with modern art and impressive architecture. The crown jewel of the park is “The Bean,” or Cloud Gate as it’s officially known. This iconic sculpture, designed by Anish Kapoor, never fails to impress with its reflective surface and unique shape. It’s the perfect spot for some fun selfies and people watching.
Lunch with Italian delicacies
After a morning of sightseeing, I was hungry, so I hopped in an Uber to grab lunch at an Italian restaurant called Monteverde that a friend recommended. Located in the West Loop, this spot is simply amazing. The food offers a modern take on traditional Italian dishes, and the lively, friendly atmosphere made it a delight even for a solo traveler like me. From the handmade pasta to the complimentary appetizers, every bite here is delicious. My personal favorite? The gnocchetti con pesto – simple but absolutely delicious!
A cultural afternoon at the Art Institute of Chicago
With a full stomach, I headed back to Millennium Park to visit the Art Institute of Chicago, which houses an extensive collection of art from around the world. From impressionist masterpieces to contemporary installations, there is something for everyone.

Stroll along the Chicago Riverwalk
The Chicago Riverwalk is a scenic waterfront promenade that offers great views of the city skyline and a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle. I took a leisurely stroll along the river, stopping occasionally to admire the architecture and watch the boats go by. It really was the perfect way to relax and enjoy the beauty of the city.
People watching in a rooftop bar
Still full from my Italian feast and tired from my day of sightseeing, I headed back to my hotel and people watched at the rooftop restaurant and bar. Boleo serves small plates, so I paired my margarita with some ceviche and watched the action under the retractable glass roof.
Chicago really makes you feel at home no matter where you’re from. And whether it’s your first time here or not, I’m sure there’s always something new to discover in the Windy City. I can’t wait to come back!
