I took my humans for a romantic getaway to a pet-friendly hotel. Here’s how it went.

International Dog Day was this Monday, but I celebrated it a little early. The Kimpton Virgilio recently opened in Mexico City and is pet-friendly, so I knew I could bring my humans.

The hotel offers a weekend deal for couples and I told them that was why we were going. They were immediately excited.

Kimpton helped me keep up the charade by putting a huge bouquet of roses, chocolates, and a bottle of champagne in the room. They even took a cute photo of them from Instagram and framed it. They really made them feel special. People even got their own bed.

Of course, Angel, the animal concierge, greeted me at the door. After I checked in at the front desk, he escorted me to my room. There was a welcome card on my bed, along with a light lunch of oatmeal and this sweet carrot-gelatin mixture in the shape of a bone.

After I ate something, Angel took me to the pool where the staff greeted me on the patio and found me a chair. I was able to enjoy some rays and take a nap while the pets ate their lunch and played in the water. You know people; they’re like Labradors. They can’t stay out of puddles.

After I woke up, I took her to the nearby park to enjoy the peace and quiet, and then I walked her through a tianguis, an open-air market where people build small houses and trade toys, treats and clothes for pieces of paper. I know it’s strange, but that’s how they do it.

If we back to the room, I sent them to the bathroom with the bottle of champagne. They played in the water again (I swearthey are practically retrievers) and licked each other’s faces. I took another nap to gain energy for dinner at Pepe Mesa Española, the hotel’s restaurant.

The chef welcomed me to the table like the queen that I am, of course. While people were eating their roasted leeks, mussels, pan de tomate and a huge ribeye steak, the chef brought me a special dish of chicken and vegetables in a delicious sauce.

For some reason, the humans insisted on filming everything for the entire weekend, and all the other pets kept looking at me like I was a celebrity. When the chef lifted the glass dome over my dinner, they clapped their paws together and some of them came over to scratch my head. It was nice and felt really good too.

After dinner I was so full that I went back upstairs to my room and passed out on the humans’ bed. How embarrassing! Luckily they didn’t seem to mind and cuddled with me all night. It was almost as good as dog poop.

The next morning, I made people eat breakfast and took them for a walk in the park before checking out. When I got to the reception, everyone greeted me by name and waved goodbye as I left.

I sat outside on the sidewalk for a few minutes before we left, reflecting on my mini-vacation with the people of the city. The hotel staff let people play in the pool, eat lots of food, gave them their own bed, provided special, personalized amenities, and everyone acknowledged their presence and treated them like family.

Kimpton really Is animal friendly.
