In 2024, not a month goes by without a sequel andThe Crow (2024) is August’s contribution. Even by the standards of today’s film industry, it is Twisters, Gladiator II And The Crow coming out within months is exaggerated. Not to mention new legacy sequels like Planet of the Apes: Kingdom And Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The Crow has the Right Idea, but suffers from all the classic pitfalls of the worst versions of all these films.

Fans of the original 1994 film, directed by Alex Proyas, know the new crow The film only exists because of the strangely sparse marketing campaign. Casual audiences have no reason to see it. Director Rupert Sanders (Ghost in the Shell) and author Zach Baylins (King Richard) Adaptation of the comic by James O’Barr fails completely.

The action in the remake of The Crow is great

But that is exactly what holds the film back

The action in The Crow is solid and the film doesn’t shy away from getting bloody. The modern gunfights and slasher-style knife work make the film a highlight. In one operatic scene, Skarsgård impales two thugs and slices another’s face in half. While this doesn’t make up for the average film with a lackluster script, it still offers a few spectacular scenes.

… (
The Crow
) reveals the lack of emotion at the heart of the plot. This is a problem if we are supposed to buy into Eric’s revenge from the start.

Thanks to visual effects technology, it has become possible to regrow limbs in a much more realistic way. There’s no denying that the CGI in the film is both good and well-timed. Kudos to all the stunt performers who really pull off some of the wilder kills with broken bones and blood splatters. Skargsård himself does a great job of conveying the healing factor of his character. When his leg breaks and he puts it back in place, we hear his cries of pain and are disgusted by the reality of what is on screen.

Ironically, it’s also the action-oriented approach that really keeps this film from being great. John WickThe refinement of the action film runs through all revenge films of these days, but in the case of The crow, it also reveals the lack of emotion at the heart of the plot. That’s a problem if we’re supposed to buy into Eric’s revenge from the start.

If the film had a different name and was just another action movie, it would probably soon fade away – forgettable and harmless. But because there is so much history attached to the film’s title, the expectations and standards are much higher. Unfortunately, those standards are not met. Worse, they are disappointing.

The remake of The Crow still stands in the shadow of the original film

Bill Skarsgård’s performance is good, but can’t surpass Brandon Lee’s

Skarsgård is good in the role of the title character, but Brandon Lee’s work is not the kind of performance that can be replicated. However, that is no one’s fault but Hollywood, as the industry tries to remake so many classics. When we talk about remaking films like Dangerous surf and enter the realm of cult classics like The crow, it’s up to us to realize that nothing is sacred. Still, it’s the responsibility of these legacy sequels to deliver a good product, regardless of what we think of it.

If we are very lucky, we will get a film like Top Shooter: MaverickOtherwise we will only have 2024 The Crow – a film that means well, looks solid and is brimming with acting talent, but has neither the script nor the soul to succeed.

The Crow is now in cinemas. The film is 111 minutes long and is rated R for strong bloody violence, violence, sexuality/nudity and drug use.
