I’m having trouble reading Kyle Mooney’s new horror comedy “Y2K”

“Two high school nobodys decide to crash the last big party before the new millennium on New Year’s Eve 1999. When the clock strikes midnight, the night turns even crazier than they could have ever imagined.”

As I said in the title, I’m having some difficulties with this.

On one hand, you have the incredibly funny Kyle Mooney making his first film. A cool concept in “What if Y2K was real?” A vibe that’s kind of a mix of the “Project X” and “Superbad” movies of our youth and a bit of “Small Soldiers.” A rare 90-minute running time. All of that is pretty fascinating.

On the other hand, this cast isn’t very promising. The kid from IT is paired with Rachel Zegler, who just finished a DISASTROUS press tour for Snow White last year that turned a lot of the audience against her. That doesn’t mean anything to me, although Julian Dennison was very solid in Deadpool 2 and nearly perfect in Hunt for the Wild Ones. On top of that, not a single joke in this trailer appealed to me. Hopefully they go in the opposite direction of what all movies seem to be doing these days and save their best stuff for the actual movie instead of putting it in the trailer.

I pray I’m just being too pessimistic, because we could really use more top-notch high school comedies.
