The government’s top priority is to improve public order, retired Home Advisor Lt. Gen. Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said today (August 19).

Speaking to journalists in his office at the Secretariat, the adviser stressed the urgency of addressing security concerns and explained his dual responsibilities in both the home affairs and agriculture sectors.

“Our biggest challenge at the Home Office is maintaining law and order. We are focused on improving the situation as quickly as possible,” he said.

He also spoke about his goals in the agricultural sector, saying: “My goal is to increase production and ensure that we can feed more people.”

Earlier, Chowdhury met with UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis to discuss possible United Nations support in various sectors.

“Our discussions revolved around what kind of help they can provide in this situation and in what areas we need help,” he noted.

Regarding the ongoing Rohingya crisis, the adviser said the government had asked the UN for additional support.

“The Rohingya population is growing every day. There are currently 1.2 million people living in the country. The costs are rising rapidly and it is uncertain how long we can sustain this,” he said.

The adviser also mentioned that a UN fact-finding mission is scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh next week. “We have discussed what kind of support they will provide us and what help we need from them,” he added.
