In Chicago, Governor Healey emphasizes Kamala Harris’s credibility in court

Before becoming governor of the Bay State, Governor Maura Healey served two terms as elected Attorney General of the State of Massachusetts.

On Thursday at the United Center, on the final night of the Democratic National Convention, it was Healey, the Commonwealth’s former chief prosecutor, who argued for the credibility of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in court.

The race between Harris and former Republican President Donald Trump comes down to a choice between a career prosecutor and a “fearsome criminal and conman,” Healey said.

In the race for the presidential nomination, the choice is between “a candidate who is concerned with his own interests and Kamala Harris, who is committed to the people,” said Healey. Harris is about to become the first woman of color to accept the presidential nomination of a major party.

Healey was one of several current or former attorneys general who took the stage to build the case for Harris, who served as California’s elected attorney general from 2011 to 2017.

Harris’ campaign against Trump is a “fight for the future of our nation, and tonight we will prove beyond a doubt that Kamala Harris should be, she must be, the next president of the United States,” Healey said.

Healey, a former Harvard point guard who briefly played professional basketball in Austria, told the story of Harris’ conversation with a young basketball player.

“… A few weeks ago in Massachusetts, I watched a little girl meet the Vice President,” Healey recalled. “Her eyes were so big… Kamala asked her about her summer basketball camp and what position she likes to play.”

The girl told Harris “everything but defense,” Healey continued, adding that Harris “put his hand on her shoulder and replied, ‘Me too. I love offense.'”

“That means being there for the people. Kamala Harris is fighting for all Americans, she is staying on the offensive and she is winning,” Healey said.

Healey’s speech on Thursday came shortly after another Massachusetts politician, Democratic U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, spoke to a cheering crowd at the United Center.
