In the wake of protests against the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, the Centre requests reports on public order from the states every two hours

Amid widespread protests and public outrage over the rape and murder of a trainee doctor while on duty at a Kolkata hospital, the Home Ministry has made it mandatory for all states to submit a law and order report every two hours.

According to the statement, the Ministry of Interior has instructed all state police forces across the country to send updates on the public order situation every two hours via email, fax or WhatsApp.

“Regarding the two-hour public order reports. The competent authority has wanted to monitor the public order report in your State/UT in view of the murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, West Bengal. With immediate effect, a continuous two-hour public order report in this regard can be sent to the MHA control room through fax/email/WhatsApp from 4 pm today (16.08.24),” the MHA said. NDTV reported.

States have reportedly already begun implementation and will be able to submit regulations starting August 16.

“This will ensure that reports on important issues arrive in a timely manner,” a senior official was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The officer noted that there were several lapses in the Calcutta rape case.

“In such crucial cases, action must be taken quickly,” he added.

The 31-year-old doctor in training was found brutally murdered in the seminar room of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

The alleged rape and murder of the doctor has sparked nationwide protests by the medical profession.
