IndiGo introduces gender-neutral ‘Mx’ option for flight bookings

NEW DELHI: indigo will be the gender neutral Honorary title “Mx” to improve inclusivity during the flight booking process. Currently, the airline’s website only offers “male” and “female” options during the booking process.
Sukhjit S Pasricha, head of human resources at IndiGo group, said the new option provides a choice to transgender people who do not wish to come out.
In addition, the airline aims to double the number of people with disabilities it employs.
Air India Express and Vistara already offer the “Mx” option for Passengers at the time of Ticket booking.
Pasricha further said that the airline has also implemented various initiatives to support the LGBTQ+ community, such as employee referral programs designed to encourage the hiring of LGBTQ+ people. The airline has seen a steady increase in LGBTQ+ people in various roles, including pilots.
“This has strengthened candidate mobilization through internal resources and fostered a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ employees… we partner with agencies that specialize in recruiting LGBTQ+ employees. Benefits such as gender reassignment surgery and the inclusion of domestic partners in health insurance have further helped create an inclusive space and attract candidates from the community,” Pasricha said.
IndiGo had 36,860 permanent employees as of March 31, 2024, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew. The airline also employs over 240 people with disabilities in customer-facing roles in over 60 cities.
“The recruitment of persons with disabilities is determined based on several factors including safety, accommodation requirements and skill profile. We emphasize on merit-based recruitment and have recruited persons with disabilities primarily as customer service representatives/managers for airport operations functions, some also work in cargo teams,” Pasricha added.
