As part of a broader effort to promote inclusivity, IndiGo is exploring introducing the gender-neutral salutation “Mx” for internal candidates.
In addition, the country’s largest airline, which has a 62 percent share of the domestic market, wants to double the number of people with disabilities it employs.
A spokesman for the airline said it is currently considering introducing the option of addressing internal candidates as “Mx”.
Sukhjit S Pasricha, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at IndiGo, told PTI that the airline has implemented various initiatives for the LGBTQ+ community, including employee referral programs specifically designed to encourage the hiring of LGBTQ+ people.
“This has strengthened candidate mobilization through internal resources and created a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ employees… we partner with agencies that specialize in recruiting LGBTQ+ employees,” he said.
According to him, new LGBTQ+ people are constantly being hired and working for the airline in various roles, including pilots.
“Our benefits such as gender reassignment surgery and the inclusion of domestic partners in health insurance have created an even more inclusive space and are one of the attractive features of our approach to aspiring candidates from the community,” he added.
At the end of March 2024, the airline employed 36,860 permanent employees, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 flight attendants.
“Our organization employs over 240 people with disabilities in over 60 cities in customer-facing roles. Placement of people with disabilities is determined based on several factors, including safety, accommodation needs, and skill matching.
“We focus on merit-based hiring and have hired mostly people with disabilities as customer service representatives/managers for airport operations, some also work in cargo teams,” said Pasricha.
He also said that the airline aims to at least double the number of people with disabilities it employs in the coming financial year.
