CHICAGO (CBS) — Insects were placed on the breakfast buffet of the Indiana delegation to the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday morning.
A person who was present at the breakfast said that bugs that appeared to be crickets were found on the buffet – contrary to earlier reports that they were maggots.
The incident occurred at the Fairmont Chicago Hotel, 200 N. Columbus Dr., police said.
According to police, several girls or women entered the hotel and began placing “unknown objects” on the tables with food.
One person was treated and released at the scene by paramedics for an unknown reason. There were no reports of illness.
“The safety and well-being of our delegation is our top priority. All Americans have the right to peacefully protest, but ugly attacks like this have no place in our democracy,” Sam Barloga, spokesman for the Indiana Democratic Party, said in a statement. “We thank the security team for their quick response.”
Chicago police and the FBI are investigating.
In addition to Indiana, the Democratic delegations from Minnesota, Ohio, South Dakota and Missouri will be staying at the Fairmont.
