KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Instagram users were able to color their notes pink with keywords like “low key” and “mindful,” but the color often appeared as cream.
  • The pink banknote followed the temporary introduction of gold banknotes, which were later withdrawn from the market.
  • The term “demure” went viral on TikTok, leading to its widespread use and integration into various marketing strategies.

Instagram’s notes feature recently allowed users to change the color of their notes to a subtle shade of pink using certain words. The words “low key,” “cute,” “considerate,” and “mindful” were identified as triggers for this color change. Users were able to achieve the shade of pink by using any of these phrases in a message. However, due to poor color saturation, the color often appeared off-white depending on the screen quality.

Instagram users who posted pictures of their pink banknotes were aware of this change. The introduction of the pink color choice came after gold banknotes were temporarily available in a previous feature. This was confirmed by reports that gold banknotes were being withdrawn and users could no longer use keywords to simulate the gold hue.

It’s interesting to see that “demure” became popular outside of Instagram as well. On TikTok, it became a viral trend as users humorously incorporated the term into everyday situations. Jools Lebron, the creator of TikTok, was instrumental in the term’s popularity by demonstrating many contexts in which one could embody “demure.” As a result of this trend, brands and government agencies also began using “demure” in their marketing efforts.

Despite these changes, users encountered inconsistencies. The iOS app does not replicate the pink note functionality that worked in the Instagram app for Android. The fact that both applications have been updated to the latest versions suggests that Instagram may have conducted A/B testing before releasing this functionality. The inconsistent availability of features raises the possibility that different platforms use Instagram differently.
