iOS 17.6.1, new software version for iPhone: Should you upgrade?

Apple just released a surprise iPhone update: iOS 17.6.1. You can tell by the numbering that it’s a minor update, and you’d be right to assume there are no new features. Here’s what’s in it and whether you should download it to your iPhone right now.

Please note that I will be updating this post in a week, on Friday, August 16th, so check back for the final verdict.

Who is it for and how do you get it?

Like all iOS 17 updates, this one is compatible with all iPhones released in 2018 or later. That’s the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Plus, and iPhone XR from this year. And then all models in the following series: iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and the latest iPhone 15. That includes the second and third generation iPhone SE phones.

What it is about

This time it’s all about bug fixes and security issues, and Apple is unusually specific about what security issues it’s fixing.

Apple iOS 17.6.1 Security

While several issues are addressed here, Apple has focused on one issue in particular. The full notes state: “This update includes important bug fixes and resolves an issue that prevents you from turning Enhanced Privacy on or off.”

Advanced Data Protection is a key security feature of iCloud that protects data using end-to-end encryption. Apple has explained that some users – a small number, it says – were unable to turn the feature on or off, resulting in an inaccuracy.

First reactions

There were many positive responses from users, such as one who said, “I had no issues with it. The device runs smoothly and I had great battery life too.” Another said, “If you have issues with the enhanced privacy feature, 100% update. I had the issue and the update fixed it. As for other aspects, it’s very good.” There were negative comments too, but far from overwhelming.

First verdict on Apple iOS 17.6.1: Upgrade

Enhanced privacy is a key feature, and that alone makes it worth upgrading. I’ll monitor reactions over the next few weeks and update accordingly. Then on Friday, August 16, I’ll revisit this story and offer final thoughts.
