Iowa City Senior Center becomes new pickup location for online orders from the farmers market

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – For the next few Thursdays, the alley next to the Iowa City Senior Center will serve as the new pickup location for Field to Family’s virtual market.

The aim is to give people the opportunity to stock up on fresh produce more easily. By placing the collection centre in the senior centre, people who use the centre or live in the Ecumenical Tower senior home can benefit.

Customers must place their orders through the Field to Family website Sunday through Tuesday. No food will be sold at the pickup stand; only orders placed online in advance will be processed.

The new location could be ideal for seniors who don’t even have to leave their car to pick up their groceries.

“It’s a matter of accessibility as the local farmers market is always very crowded, especially now that school is starting again,” said Matisse Arnorne, a volunteer with Field to Family.

Orders can only be placed online, so the Iowa City Senior Center is prepared to assist seniors in navigating the Field to Family website.

“Field to Family has kindly agreed to help us host some informational sessions so people can get familiar with the ordering system,” said Emily Edrington of the Iowa City Senior Center.

Field to Family says there is value in sharing these products with seniors.

“It impacts their health both physically and emotionally,” Arnorne said. “It’s really amazing when we can help expand it and change people’s lives, bring more products into people’s lives who may not be able to experience that on a weekly or daily basis.”

By establishing a pickup location at the Senior Center, people no longer have to drive all the way across Iowa City to bring their produce from the field to the family office on Highway 6.

Organizers say that eight orders have already been placed for the first day of the collection point. Depending on interest, the point could remain open beyond September 26.

“It’s definitely a convenient resource and convenient for people to have access to in the downtown area,” Edrington said.
