Iowa’s most famous ice cream flavor comes from Blue Bunny

Did you know that Le Mars, Iowa produces more ice cream than anywhere else in the world?

Recently I came across an article by Taste of home which describes the most well-known ice cream flavor in all 50 states, and I was not surprised that Iowa’s choice was Blue Bunny. Blue Bunny Ice Cream (by Wells Enterprises) is made in northwest Iowa and has been an Iowa favorite since it was founded in the 1910s by Fred H. Wells Jr. and his sons.

According to Taste of Home, Blue Bunny’s Bunny Tracks is Iowa’s most famous ice cream flavor. In fact, they report that it’s the brand’s most popular flavor besides good old vanilla!

Blue Bunny’s website states that Bunny Tracks consists of vanilla ice cream, “Chocolatey peanut butter bunnies, chocolate covered peanuts, (and) caramel and fudge swirls.” In addition to the standard ice cream, Blue Bunny also offers a Bunny Tracks Load’d Sundae, Load’d Cone and Load’d Bar.

You may remember that Blue Bunny used to offer Chocolate Bunny Tracks, but that flavor has since been discontinued.

Next time you are in Northwest Iowa, you may want to visit the Wells Visitor Center and Ice Cream Parlor! The facility offers Blue Bunny lovers an insight into the history of the company as well as “an interactive experience that goes beyond the tastes and smells of the salon.” The ice cream shop offers 40 different flavors of Blue Bunny Ice Cream, including some you can’t find in stores. And the best part? You can actually try as many of these flavors as you want! In fact, tasting is encouraged!
