Israel issues new evacuation order for Khan Younis

The Israeli military has issued a new evacuation order for Khan Younis in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, citing activities by Hamas fighters as the reason. According to the United Nations, more than 70,000 people have been displaced from the Gaza Strip in recent days.

The evacuation order was issued on Sunday and affects part of a humanitarian zone designated by Israel.

The images taken on Sunday show people travelling in cars and on donkeys, laden with their belongings.

Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), wrote on social media on Sunday that more than 75,000 people have been displaced in the southwestern part of the Gaza Strip in recent days, adding that people in the area have nowhere else to go.

According to Gaza authorities, more than 100 people were killed in an Israeli air strike on a school in Gaza City where refugees were seeking shelter. The attack sparked fierce international criticism.

The Israeli military claims the school is a Hamas stronghold and says 19 fighters were killed there.

UN diplomatic sources say preparations are currently underway for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the air strike as early as Tuesday.
