As Typhoon Ampil approaches the Tokyo area, Japan is experiencing traffic disruptions and severe weather warnings. The typhoon is expected to continue its path northward into the Pacific.
What happened: Japan’s meteorological agency has issued warnings of strong winds, heavy rain and possible flooding and landslides as Typhoon Ampil approaches Japan, the Associated Press reported.
The typhoon, with sustained winds of 162 km/h, is expected to reach waters near Tokyo on Friday evening before moving north toward the Kanto and Tohoku regions.

As a precautionary measure, Central Japan Railway has suspended operations of Shinkansen bullet trains between Tokyo and Nagoya for the entire day.
Flights were cancelled at Haneda and Narita airports in Tokyo, as well as at Kansai, Osaka and Chubu airports, affecting around 90,000 passengers, according to media reports. Some highways may also be partially closed.
Japanese authorities advised people to stay away from rivers and beaches and to beware of strong winds that could throw objects through the air. Shuichi Tachiharathe JMA’s chief meteorologist, warned of “extremely strong winds and extremely rough seas”.
