Savannah Gowarty’s video of the fog on her JetBlue flight

  • Last week, JetBlue passengers en route to New York boarded a flight that was shrouded in a mysterious fog that flowed through the cabin before takeoff

  • TikToker Savannah Gowarty captured the phenomenon in a video in which she claimed to have been “soaking wet and cold” on board the plane.

  • In a statement to PEOPLE, a JetBlue spokesperson explains that pre-flight condensation is common in humid climates and is not a cause for concern.

Last week, real estate agent Savannah Gowarty reported some strange conditions on her JetBlue flight to New York.

In her now-viral TikTok video, which has garnered over 7 million views on the app, clouds of fog appeared to drift down the aisle as passengers boarded the plane.

The TikToker claimed that during the fog phenomenon, the pilot announced: “It seems to be raining in the cabin.”

Gowarty’s hair and skin looked damp as she told the camera she was “so cold” when she sat down. She also folded her shirt over the side of her seat and wrote above it: “Hoping this will air dry on my armrest.”

“There’s nothing better than being soaking wet and cold on a four-hour flight back to New York,” Gowarty added in the caption of her video.

TikTok users expressed their shock and confusion over the pre-flight incident in the video’s comments section, but the airline said the conditions were nothing to worry about.

“The condensation or fog is normal, especially in humid climates, and does not cause wetness on the aircraft,” JetBlue spokesman Derek Dombrowski said in a statement to PEOPLE. “We believe passengers became wet due to heavy rain that occurred as they boarded the aircraft via an outside ramp and stairs.”

In August 2019, travelers experienced a similar case of condensation on a Delta flight, also to New York. But while Gowarty’s video captured a relatively light fog, passengers described the earlier incident as extremely dense fog.

“I’ve never seen such density,” Alan Yurman, a retired investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board, told CNN at the time.

Despite the troubling clouds, Delta issued a statement to PEOPLE similar to JetBlue’s recent statement five years later, clarifying that the fog was not a cause for alarm.

However, passengers on the 2019 Delta flight claimed that during the 30 minutes they waited on the tarmac before takeoff, flight crew did little to reassure them about the clouds above them.

“The flight attendants didn’t make a real announcement, they just said they were rehearsing for their Halloween haunted house and kind of joked about it instead of saying it was because of the humidity or condensation,” passenger Amanda Goncalves told CNN about the 2019 outage.

In-flight irregularities continue to make headlines on a regular basis. In March 2024, United Airlines emphasized its focus on safety after a series of five incidents occurred within a week, some of which resulted in emergency evacuations of passengers and crew.

“Safety is our highest priority and is at the heart of everything we do,” United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said in a statement to PEOPLE earlier this year.

His statement continued: “Unfortunately, our airline has experienced a number of incidents in recent weeks that remind us of the importance of safety. While they are all unrelated, I want you to know that these incidents have caught our attention and sharpened our focus.”
