Julián Álvarez on leaving Man City: I needed a new challenge

Julián Álvarez has said he left Manchester City after just two seasons and joined Atlético Madrid because he needed “a new challenge”.

The Argentine international, whose contract with City runs until June 2028, completed his move to Atlético for £82 million ($104 million) earlier this week.

“I felt like I needed a change in my career,” Alvarez said at his presentation on Friday.

“I had to look for a new challenge and I believe that this club offers me the means to do my best.”

Alvarez scored 19 goals in 54 appearances for City last season, but was unable to displace Erling Haaland as the team’s first-choice striker.

“I came here to help the team and fight for every title,” said Alvarez. “I am very happy and motivated.”

“I spoke to (Diego) Simeone and he said he wanted me to come here. He said I would help the team and they would promote my strengths and help me improve my weaknesses. My goal is to be at my best, help the team win and take Atlético to the highest level.”

The 24-year-old won six trophies with City, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League. During his time at the club, he starred in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph and also won the Copa América earlier this summer.

“I learned a lot there (at City),” said Alvarez. “I’m grateful for the two years I was there.”

After his two seasons with Pep Guardiola, the striker said he was looking forward to working under Simeone.

“They (Guardiola and Simeone) are among the best coaches in the world,” he said.

“I don’t feel like a superhero because I won the World Cup. I still have a lot to learn and improve.”

“I am delighted to be working with Simeone because he means a lot to this club and to world football.”

Atlético starts its LaLiga season on August 19 away at Villarreal.
