Jupiter Power brings Texas energy storage facility online

Jupiter Power LLC announced the commercial commissioning of 400 MWh of on-demand power to the ERCOT grid from its Callisto I battery storage facility in Houston, Texas, USA. This new facility, which will significantly increase Houston’s supply of reliable, emissions-free energy in the face of record demand, is a product of the market-driven improvements lawmakers have made over the past few years to add competitive on-demand power to the ERCOT grid.

The Callisto I Energy Centre is a 200 MW/400 MWh battery storage system located in downtown Houston, 5 miles from the Medical Centre and 10 miles from the Houston Ship Channel, on the site of a former HL&P HO Clarke fossil-fuel power plant. The site has the capacity to accommodate an additional 400 MW/800 MWh of battery storage energy.

“Jupiter couldn’t be prouder to bring the Callisto I project online,” said Andy Bowman, CEO of Jupiter Power. “This project is a response to lawmakers’ calls to increase affordable and on-demand new energy generation in an area where people need more electricity. Callisto I is the first energy storage project of this scale in the City of Houston and will help meet Houston’s growing electricity needs while increasing resiliency to extreme weather events.”

Callisto I represented Jupiter Power’s expansion of large-scale battery storage projects outside of West Texas and into Houston to provide the city with clean, reliable, zero-emissions electricity.

“The announcement of Jupiter Power’s Callisto I energy storage project is significant and exciting for the region as it is the first large-scale, grid-connected energy storage project in the City of Houston. This important project will help manage peak electricity demand and is another great example of our region’s leadership in scaling and delivering impactful solutions for a comprehensive energy future,” said Jane Stricker, Senior Vice President of the Greater Houston Partnership and Executive Director of the Houston Energy Transition Initiative (HETI).

“It is important that Texas has a diversified power generation portfolio,” added State Senator Charles Schwertner, chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce and Economics. “Batteries play an important role in that portfolio to meet demand in times of need.”

Jupiter Power is a developer, owner and operator of standalone, grid-connected battery storage projects founded in 2017. Callisto I is Jupiter’s ninth project in ERCOT, bringing the total capacity of ERCOT facilities to 1375 MWh. In December 2023, Jupiter Power announced the closing of a $65.2 million financing with First Citizens Bank to fund the construction of Callisto I.
