Justin Allgaier wins the NASCAR Xfinity Series race and pulls away from the rest in overtime in Michigan

BROOKLYN, Michigan – Justin Allgaier drove to his second Xfinity Series victory of the year and his 25th overall on Saturday at Michigan International Speedway by pulling away from the rest of the field in an overtime finish.

Allgaier broke a tie for 10th place with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tommy Houston to take the win in the second-tier NASCAR series.

“Not even in my wildest dreams did I think I would reach this number,” said the 36-year-old Allgaier.

The three-kilometer-long oval in Michigan was the 18th track at which he won a race.

Sheldon Creed finished second for the 11th time, setting an Xfinity Series record for second-place finishes without a win. He is the only Xfinity Series driver to finish in the top five in 10 races this year.

John Hunter Nemechek, last year’s Xfinity winner at Michigan, finished third.

Creed and Sam Mayer had signed multi-year contracts earlier in the day to drive in the second-tier series next season for the Haas Factory Team, an offshoot of Stewart-Haas Racing.

Because of wet weather that caused qualifying for the Cup Series to be canceled, the Xfinity event was stopped nearly ten minutes early and then stopped again for three additional laps toward the end of a race scheduled for 125 laps.

On the final restart, Allgaier was able to break free in the No. 7 Chevrolet before Kyle Sieg had a race-ending accident on the final lap. Sieg, who was able to get out of the car under his own power, was treated and released from the Infield Care Center.

Allgaier, who drives for JR Motorsports, also won the series at Darlington Raceway in May this season. This is the fifth consecutive year he has won the series at least twice.

Shane Van Gisbergen, who finished 17th in the 38-car field on Saturday, has the highest number of wins in the series this year with three.

There are still five races left in the regular season, without a one-week break, before the playoffs for the twelve drivers begin on September 28 in Kansas.
