Justin Herbert and Chargers rescued from hotel elevator in Dallas

Justin Herbert hasn’t thrown a single pass or taken a single snap during the Los Angeles Chargers’ preseason, but new head coach Jim Harbaugh already knows his starting quarterback can stay calm under pressure.

Harbaugh said Sunday that “11 or 12 of our players” were trapped in the elevator at the team’s Dallas hotel Friday night. Herbert was one of the unfortunate Chargers who spent two hours in the elevator before being led by Dallas Fire-Rescue through ceiling panels into an adjacent elevator.

Harbaugh said he simply missed taking the elevator. As he watched everyone emerge from what he called a “test of willpower,” the Chargers coach was most impressed by one person – Herbert.

“And it was hot,” Harbaugh told the Associated Press. “When people came out of the elevator, they were all sweating and some had taken their shirts off. Justin Herbert’s hair was a little wet. But his shirt was completely dry. That was another experience that blew my mind.”

According to statements from Herbert’s teammates, Harbaugh said the franchise quarterback demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities.

“Justin Herbert is a leader,” Harbaugh said. “He was a rock. He kept everyone calm. And everyone kept their composure.”

On Saturday, the Chargers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 26-19 to finish the preseason 1-2. The defense had a strong day, recording five interceptions against backup QB Trey Lance.

To compete in the AFC West, the Chargers will need to keep Herbert quiet under criticism in an offense that lost playmakers Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler in the offseason.

Herbert, who has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, was sidelined with a foot injury but is now “fully healed,” according to Chargers commentator and team legend Dan Fouts. The good news gives the Chargers hope that Herbert can be ready for the season opener on Sept. 8 against the rival Las Vegas Raiders.
