Maya Harris, sister of Vice President Kamala Harris, wore a power suit on the final night of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago. The lawyer and former senior policy adviser to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign wore a tailored double-breasted blazer with matching flared-hem trousers.
Power suits were designed to convey authority and confidence in a male-dominated workplace. The concept originated in the 1980s and featured tailored cuts and bold colors that helped women assert their presence in the business world. The pink power suit in particular has become a contemporary symbol of female empowerment, reclaiming a color often associated with fragility and femininity. The shade is also the color of Kamala’s sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, along with green.
Maya Harris took the stage to talk about her sister and her late mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris. “Mom understood the power and opportunity that comes with knowing and showing who you really are. She knew that we could be the authors of our own stories, just as she was the opportunity she wanted for Kamala and me. This is a distinctly American story,” said Maya Harris.
Maya Harris’ daughter Meena also attended the event in a costume by Erdem.
The 2024 Democratic National Convention took place in Chicago from Monday to Thursday. The event, which was about officially nominating Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential candidate and confirming her choice of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as vice president, also featured some fashion statements.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama took the stage in a criss-cross jacket by Monse, First Lady Jill Biden dazzled in a tailored Ralph Lauren dress, and Clinton showed off her signature style in a tweed suit. Ella Emhoff, daughter of Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, and Ashley Biden, daughter of President Joe Biden, also opted for luxury fashion for the convention: Ella wore Thom Browne and Ashley wore all white in Gabriela Hearst.
